Virtual Nics not configured after Tools Upgrade

After upgrading to ESX4.1 Update1 and then upgrading the tools on the VM's I have had two VMs where the virtual NICS have not been functioning. In each case the configuration in the OS is correct, but ipconfig shows a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address. In one case a reboot cleared the problem. On this second server a reboot has not fixed the issue. We tried removing and readding the virtual NIC as well as disabling/reenabling in the OS as well and that has not worked. Wondering if anyone else has seen this before and if there is a fix. I could always add a second NIC and delete the first, but I would like to know what is going on before doing this. Since this is only a test server I have some time to play/investigate.

You may want to check to see if there are any hidden NICs in Device Manager.  You will need to do the following to see them:

  1. Open a command prompt.
  2. Type:  set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
  3. Type:  devmgmt.msc
  4. Select View from the top menu and then click on Show hidden devices.

Drill down into your Network Adapters and see if you see any hidden ones there.  If you do, remove them and readd the device.

Thanks. I checked and did not find any additional hidden nics.

I found a KB that refers to a problem when upgrading tools if the VM is type 4, but I do not believe this was the case with this server.
