Virtual Machine is showing as Invalid (vSphere 5.1)

I understand that vSphere 5.1 is EOL and we are moving on to 6.7. However, I have a strange issue that one of our virtual machines is showing as "Invalid" with no descriptions. It seems like it is unable to read the vmx file at all. The server is up and running which is good. But, there are no controls available like; "Edit settings" etc.

I've tried VMware Knowledge Base  with no luck. All ESXi hosts have been rebooted. Although the VM is powered On, still it gives option to power on and fails if I try to do so.

Any suggestions please..

I am wondering if V2V will fix this without any impact.

PS: There are no backups for this VM.

Guys, I have an update. I dont understand the relation but after I rebooted both vCenter server and application server, the application server is showing fine in vCenter.

Thank you all for your inputs.

As a first step, please post a complete list of files in the VM's folder. Make sure the listing contains file names, extensions, sizes, and time stamps.

Depending on whether the following files exist in the VM's folder, download *.vmx, *.vmsd *.log files, compress/zip them, and attach the .zip archive to a reply post.

Looks like the ESXI host is unable to access the storage. Can you verify this?

This condition happens when the ESXi host cannot access the vmx file in the datastore, so it sort of forgets the configuration of the machine. The process which runs the virtual machine is still running on the host, so your VM does not crash.

I can see and browse the datastore through the host where it is on now.

If you have all files present in datastore, can you take downtime of 30 mins to re-register VM?

One way to re-register the VM would be to shut down the virtual machine, remove it from inventory, browse the datastore, then re-add it to inventory and power on the virtual machine.

Was I helpful? Give a kudo for appreciation!

Thanks Rick. I’ve tried this already and it did not work. I am thinking if V2v would work, but not sure of the repercussion.

Guys, I have an update. I dont understand the relation but after I rebooted both vCenter server and application server, the application server is showing fine in vCenter.

Thank you all for your inputs.

We are migrating from 5.5 to 6.5 (why 6.5 there's a reason)

Back to the point at hand.

In particular Windows 2008, Windows 2008r2 servers and Windows 7 VDI's have this issue.

They appear to power off and are marked as ServersName(invalid) as tools are upgraded. This doesn't occur 100% of the time but it does occur about 50%.

When this occurs you really have to right click the guest which is now called ServersName(invalid) and remove from inventory.

Brows the storage, find the servers ServersName.vmx file and register the guest again..

OH and do this via the HTML5 interface.. (Not the horrid flash based WEB Interface as you can not remove from inventory, you must use the less horrid HTML5 interface)

So there's some info on the current behavior of a typical Win7, 2008 machine...

After reading a few discussions on this I was thinking is this something to do with the fact that esxi 6.5 appears to not be able to access the guests config until it's powered off etc..

I also noticed the issue only occured with VM's that didn't discover new hardware once in 6.5..

So to test this I've stopped upgrading the tools..

My routine is ugly but it does appear to prevent this issue of the guests becoming invalid..

I'm hot migrating, once the guest is running on an ESXi 6.5 host, I perform the below routine.

1. Power the guest off.

2. power the guest on.

3. wait until the guest is at the login screen, give it about 60 seconds with it's self (at the login screen)..

4. reboot the guest

5. wait again until the guest is at the login screen give it again about 60 seconds.

6. Upgrade the VMTools unassisted.. The guest upgrades the VMtools, Reboots and is all good..

I'm aware this is not pretty but it works persistently and appears to prevent the ServersName(invalid) issue occuring..

For god sake VMWare what are you doing..

We get this horrible management environment and a bag of critical issues to manage.

Maybe I have it wrong. I thought VMWare were now owned by Dell.. It must be Microsoft who have purchased them, it's obvious by the misguided technical direction and flaky products..

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's sounds crazy and could be nerve racking when critical servers are involved. However, we have now migrated from vSphere 5.1 to vSphere 6.7. It's not user friendly as you tend to refresh too often to see the changes.

it is the condition when the ESXi host cannot access the vmx file, please post a complete list of files in the VM's folder, check the listings contain file names, extensions, sizes, and time stamps.

Hi Jeff. Thanks for your response. This would probably have been the case then and the problem was resolved by rebooting the virtual machine.
