Virtual Machine (Unavailable) cannot find VXD or any files in source but machine is running

Hi,

I have a problem at the moment where VC and also the individual host is reporting two of my virtual machines as unavailable but the machines are running and i can mstsc to them and also connect via unc. the problem is that when browsing the LUN where the files reside the files do not seem to be there even though other files within the same LUN are.

I have backed up data via UNC but am worried about shutting this machine down as i may not be able to startup or find the files (vxd, vmdk) again.

I would be grateful if anyone has any ideas? Strange

Thanks

What's the version of ESX? I have seen similar issues with templates.

I've seen this before whereby vCenter didn't get resource update from ESX hosts when the VM moved. You can try to :

1. restart vCenter service / database or

2. restart ESX mgmt-vmware service or

3. manually locate the VM from service console on each ESX hosts

Hi ,

Restarting the VC Machine had no affect and the two virtual machines in question are now showing as inaccessable.

Restarting the mgmt-service had no affect.

using the command vmware-cmd -l on the esx server last running the virtual machine shows that the machines are running and the paths are as i thought but browsing to the path the files do not seem to be there, one thing to note is that when trying to create new folders within the affected folder you cannot unlike when you create a new folder in an ajacent folder within the same lun / vmfs volume?

Thanks

Then you should investigate whether you are facing LUN detection issue. rescan LUN, vmfs & refresh storage (ESX configuration tab). Try look into messages & vmkernel log files to get some hints.
