Virtual Center database on SQL Cluster?

Hi,

We are looking at upgrading from ESX 4.1 U1 -> 5.1 in the coming months and im wanting to know if the database can be placed on a SQL cluster. I cant find much about this on the web.

I cant find any documentation on this,

From this blog it states its NOT Supported - http://longwhiteclouds.com/2012/10/22/clustering-support-on-vcloud-director-and-vcenter-databases/

But from this communities it say Supported - http://communities.vmware.com/thread/400259

VMware does not  certify these third-party solutions. VMware will offer best effort  support for any issues encountered with an environment that uses  third-party solutions for protecting against VMware VirtualCenter  downtime. However, if your issue is determined to be related to the  third-party clustering solution, VMware will refer to our third-party  software policy.

Thanks for getting back to me. So has anyone had vcenter database on a SQL cluster and if so did you have any issues?

We ran ours on Oracle RAC (not quite SQL Server, but same idea) with no problems.

When a cluster failover occured did vcenter have any issues? For example of a storage or vmotion was occuring at the same time a cluster failover occured did it still complete?

As of 4.0 and above, it did fine.

Running vCenter Server with a clustered database (be it RAC or SQL with Microsoft Failover Clustering) although it may work, it is not tested and therefore not supported by VMware (as from vSphere 4.0). This situation may well change in upcoming releases of vCenter so it would pay to look out for changes in the release notes. The supported protection options currently are VMware HA and vCenter Server Heartbeat.
