Very strange vSwitch problem: Unable to find vswitch at config location /net/vswitch/child

Today I encountered a very strange problem with VMware Standard vSwitches on a newly-deployed (from HP-customized image) HP server.

Although the network configuration (vSwitch 0) initially appeared to be correct, when I connected to the shell and ran:

~ # esxcli network vswitch standard list

Unable to find vswitch at config location /net/vswitch/child

~ #

I got the result you see above. Further, when I created vSwitch1 for iSCSI, network config changed to reflect the following:

vSwitch0.jpg

I checked /etc/vmware/esx.conf and saw no obvious issues. I also tried to delete the empty vSwitches and got an error. Any ideas?

UPDATE:

I was able to use: esxcfg-vswitch -d pps

To remove the first viswitch in the list (pps)

I was unable to use: esxcfg-vswitch -d DVfileter Coalesce Portset, esxcfg-vswitch -d --dvswitch DVfileter Coalesce Portset, or any esxcli command to remove "DVfileter Coalesce Portset"

In the end, I reset system config to default.
