Very slow Web Client Performance

Lately we have been experiencing abnormally slow performance when using the vSphere Web Client.  In particular, logins take 55 seconds to get to the main page and it takes ~70 seconds to bring up the Edit Settings menu.  Navigation within the Web Client is as responsive as it has ever been.  The slowness only appears when attempting to login or interact with a VM.

I have tweaked the JVM settings per: VMware KB: Configuring Tomcat server settings in VMware vCenter Server 5.1 and 5.5

We haven't made any changes to the Web Client config in months and only have 3-4 users using it at any given time.

vCenter server specs: (2) Intel Xeon E5-2650 CPUs @ 2.00 GHz, 16 GB of RAM.  Physical box running vCenter 5.5 on Server 2008 R2 SP1

This server manages 17 hosts all running ESXi 5.5

Just curious.. Can you try logging in using administrator@vsphere.local / that password and see if it performs the same way? Also, does it perform the same when using different browsers? I am assuming you tried the obvious like cleared cache etc?

We had similar performance issue with vSphere client and the issue was vCenter database drive being 99% full. You might want to check the available free space in the vcenter database.

Thanks,

Arun

Did you installed the vsphere client integration plugin for your web browser . which is really boost the performance of your web client. i was facing the same issue . but now all fixed after installing that plugin.

Logging in with the administrator@vsphere.local account was very quick on logon, but still very slow to edit the settings.

This is affecting all browsers (chrome, firefox, and IE); cache has been cleared; have even tried it on a brand new image.

The SQL server has terabytes of free storage.  The Client Integration Plugin is installed and allowed for each browser.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of Flash Player has rapidly sped up logins.  But Editing Settings is still horribly slow.

Our SQL admin confirmed that the server is very underutilized and has not seen any performance issues with the box.

Does the vCenter server have any errors in the event viewer? I am thinking there could be an issue with the VMware inventory service/Inventory service database..

There are not any errors in the Event Viewer that I can find.  When I pulled the Inventory Service logs, I do see several instances of the below lines in the wrapper.log file.  Not sure if they are the issue or not.

It may be worth reading about this :

VMware KB: Resetting the VMware vCenter Server 5.x Inventory Service database

I am thinking your Inventory database has issues. Unfortunately, not certain but might be worth a snapshot/running through that article.
