VSphere VC

All,

I currently have a 3.5 environment and getting ready to roll out a Vsphere env.

Question is, can I admin the 3.5 environment from within the new VSphere VC?

Yes, you can. Actually you can even mix ESX 3.5 and 4.0 in the same cluster and VMotion VMs between them, so upgrade to vSphere will be without downtime.

Thanks! SO, I can also run the vsphere client and administer both the 3.5 a 4 environments from a single vsphere instance?

Absolutely.

Just one note: you should also leave/install License server for 3.5 hosts.

Yes, you will need a license key for your vCenter4 instance. Check your licensing portal, it should be there.

Yes, vCenter 4 requires another license. If you had active support at moment vSphere was released (end of May) then you should have vCenter 4 license also, because it should be automatically upgraded from vCenter 2.5 to vCenter 4.

Any links or docs on the upgrade process would be appreciated..

It was really easy for me. All you need is in manuals - Update Manager 4.0 worked like a charm unlike 1.0 in vCenter 2.5.

Yes Vcenter 4 will alloow you to manage both ESX 3.x and 4.x. You can vmotion and storage vmotion if you have the license. Only will some of this functionality be lost when you upgrade the actual VM's from version 4 (native ESX 3.5) to version 7 (native ESX 4.x). the upgrade for the vm can be done through the VUM and the upgrade baselines.

I have a 5 cluster farm in one datacenter and I am adding the vsphere farm in another DC. So within the new VC4 I can add all my 3.5 clusters?
