VSphere Integrated Containers - Iam a little bit confused

Hi there.

Iam trying to run VIC on an Standalone ESXi 6.5 host. But Iam having a lot of problems.

I was in the believe that this was possible, but then I found this document VIC - Vsphere Integrated Containers that in page 8 topic "vSphere Integrated Containers Appliance Requirements" says that deploying the appliance directly in ESXi is not supported.

But then in page 9 topic "Supported Configurations for VCH Deployment" says that you can deploy VCHs in ESXi 6.5 Standalone.

So how do I deploy a VCH without deploying VIC first.

Iam stucked at this point. Cant find any good tutorial or document with straightforward information.

Thanks!

Hi,

You will never find straightforward information regarding vmware products.

It's just a chaos with no one being responsible about it.

VCH (Container Host) is just the endpoint, VIC is what brings it all together.

A VCH represents the following elements:

  • A clustered pool of resource into which to provision container VMs.
  • A single-tenant container namespace.
  • An isolated Docker API endpoint.
  • Authorization to use and configure pre-approved virtual infrastructure.
  • A private network that containers are attached to by default

So although you can deploy VCH standalone you need VIC to use it.
