What version of vSphere are you using and what exact device are you trying to determine the firmware for? The main server motherboard, the NICs, disk controller, etc...
We are using Vsphere 4.1 and needs to check motherboard, NIC & Fibre cards also.
The hardware using HP DL 380 G6 Servers
You can use wbemcli/wsman for getting the information
