VMware tools not installed

I have installed 2 esxi 5.0 servers. I have installed a 2008 r2 server on one of the esxi servers. I cannot shut down or do anything from the toolbar. I have to cliick in the window to work the mouse in the vm. So i know that the tools are not installed or not working. I have looked on all the menus and can find no option to install the tools. the error is The guest OS cannot be shut down because VMware Tools is not installed, in not running, or is not responding. How do i resolve this issue?

if you open a console of the guest, you should see at the top toolbar VM-Guest-Install/Upgrade VMware Tools

To use the Shutdown command from the vSphere Client menu, VMware Tools need to be installed since they actually initiate the shutdown in this case. Without VMware Tools installed the only option to shutdown a guest is either interactively in the guest OS or through remote commands (e.g. shutdown.exe -i).

To install VMware Tools follow the steps in e.g. http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1018377
