VMware Tools installation hangs.

I am running ESX 4.1.0 348481.  After upgrading I attempted to upgrade the VMware tools on my SBS 2008 VM.  The installation hung during the install with the progress bar about 1/5 across.  The install hung in that state for several days.  I canceled the install, rebooted and tried again.  Same thing.  I canceled the installation, rebooted, removed the old VMware tools and rebooted.  I am now trying to install VMware tools fresh and am getting the same thing.

I tried following the advice in this article to confirm the old VMware tools were completely uninstalled.

I tried to install again, but experienced the same problem.

does it happen to one particular type of OS only? do you have any anti virus install?

It happens on SBS 2008. I have Symantec AV installed, but not running (services disabled) for the install of VMware tools.

I also tried running it in AD Restore Mode. Same result.

I had a similar sounding problem on VMware Workstation over the last few days. I finally tracked it down to something with the virtual printing. To solve it, I did a custom install of Tools rather than typical or complete and disabled the virtual printing component. That let tools install properly.

Hope this helps,

Jason

I would try the following troubleshooting steps:

Log in as another user with admin rights --> You never know if a profile has gone nuts.

Clean out the temp \windows\temp etc files

Change the vmware tools install directory and or change the type of setup

Start the tools install and navigate to my computer. Go to the vritual mounted CD drive and copy the vmware tools files to the hard  drive, end the install, and restart the install using the setup folder on the hard drive.
