VMware Tools images erased

Good afternoon everyone,

Recently I´ve come across a very weird problem. A customer has its entire infrastructure based on ESXi 4.0.

One day, after performing a few P2Vs, I noticed that VMware Tools wasn´t installing as requested.

When I tried installing it manuall, the following message appeared:

"Unable to install VMware Tools. An error occurred while trying to access image file "/usr/lib/vmware/isoimages/windows.iso" needed to install VMware Tools: No such file or directory. If your product shipped with the VMware Tools package, please reinstall VMware ESX, then try again to install the VMware Tools package in your virtual machine."

What t... was my first impression about it.

Logged in through the "unsupported" console and started browsing the directories:

/usr/lib/vmware/isoimages, where isoimages points to /productLocker/vmtools

productLocker points to /locker/packages/4.0.0 and locker points to /vmfs/volumes/4bd83948-...

Well, I´ve browsed there and noticed that 4.0.0 directory was, somehow, erased.

I think that´s very weird that the directory spontaneously deleted itself up.

One P2V installed VMware Tools just fine and, 30 minutes later, the other one failed.

I´m going for a solution of picking it up from another host and copying it, but I´d like to know if anybody ever came across this issue, and managed to discover how/why it happened.

Thank you for your time
