Hi,
We have a VMware Essentials pack. I added a old host with a single CPU to the vsphere recently to migrate some VM's to the new production host.
Now I have completed this migration I wish to delete this old host.
I can't assign the hypervisor license to the host while it is still connected in the vsphere as this fails to apply because the host has the vsphere agent active.
I can remove it from the vsphere inventory both using the legacy client and the vsphere web client.
However the license key is not returned to the pool available on the server.
I can confirm that I have now assigned a hypervisor only license to the host once it was disconnected.
and after reading other peoples comments I have left this for over a week as some people suggest that the license update can take half an hour or so.
I have now shut down the old host but still wish to recover the CPU license that this host still seems to have.
In the vsphere licensing if I look at the hosts tab it only lists the remaining hosts and the old host I'm trying to delete is not there.
However in the license keys tab the essentials license CPU usage still shows one extra CPU.
We are using the vsphere server appliance version 5.5.0 build 2646482
How do I get the vsphere to no longer count the old host in the license usage?
That's unusual. What you may try - unless already done - is to reboot the vCenter Server Appliance (maybe restarting the service from the Web Console - Port 5480 - is sufficient) to see whether this corrects the license usage!?

Check if helps: VMware KB: Cannot remove a License Key from VMware vCenter Server 4.x and 5.x
Hi rcportoRichardson Porto,
Thanks for pointing this out, I had seen this thread but the second step is Start->Run adsiedit.msc
Which I'm assuming is not applicable to the vsphere appliance?
And there are no clues about how to go about finding the same thing in the appliance.
Presumably in the appliance it doesn't use ADAM at all?
Thanks for your contribution.

I have found another thread of a very similar problem.
Seems that to do this they were given a temporary license key.
I guess I'm hoping for the same sort of help?

The "have you turned it off and on" wins again.
Can't believe I hadn't tried that yet.
Thanks,
Shane.
