VMware 5.x & 512e HDD

Dear All,

I am having some performance issues copying folders in a VM. A 50GB folder takes more that 6 hours to copy to a new folder in the same directory. All H/W components are okay. We only have 1 VM running.

I came upon this article:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=209160...

We are using,  2 x HARD DRIVE, 500G, S3, 7.2K, 512E, TSH-MARS (Raid 1).

Could this be an issue??

Thanks

Ken

Hi Ken,

unfortunately I think that the 512e might really be an issue - when you are performing writes and your I/O requests get segmented (because of a misalignment) you get a performance deterioration - more so when it's "just" 7,2k RPM drives in RAID1 - could you try getting disk(s) with native 512 sector format, doing a storage vMotion there and compare the performance?
