VMtools re-installation stuck in SLES 11 SP3 (ESXi 6.0 U2)

Hello,

We are running VMware ESXi 6.0 U2 and have installed SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (SP3) on a VM. The VMware Tools on this VM were running and we wanted to re-install it while troubleshooting some GUI issues on this VM.

While re-installing now it is not going further then below option,

===========================================

Creating a new initrd boot image for the kernel.

Kernel image:    /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.76-0.11-default

Initrd image:    /boot/initrd-3.0.76-0.11-default

===========================================

It is just stuck there and not getting completed.

Can someone guide on the reason why it is not going further an how can we install the VMware tools on the VM successfully.

Also please guide, is it safe to stop the installation and just restart the VM and start a fresh installation of VMware tools ? Will the VM boot correctly in this case ?

Regards,

K

Did the VMTools installation complete successfully? From what I understand, what you're describing in your post is VM not being able to boot. Did it happen when you rebooted the VM after VMTools installation?

reinstall is 2 steps I believe.. uninstall --> reboot and then intall --> reboot.

are you getting this option during uninstall and reboot?

what components of vmtools were you using int sles..?

vmxnet3, paravirtual scsi etc..

how log has it been stuck in creating a new initrd image?

If your installation of the vmware tools stalls at creating the new initrd image, do not restart your VM.

First kill the installation process.

Then before restarting create a new initrd image with mkinitrd to make sure you can boot after shutting down your VM. Be sure to add all necessary boot devices into your image.

Then restart.

After restart I'd uninstall vmware tools.

After a second restart you can try to reinstall Vmware tools again.
