VMotion Vmkernal default gateway

Hi All,

Can anyone explain how the VMkernal uses the management VMKernal's default gateway as it's own default gateway if they are completely different subnets?

TIA

Simple answer, it doesn't. You can configure a single gateway address for the VMkernel ports and this address (usually used for the Management Network) shows up - grayed out though - in the other VMkernel port group settings. However, it cannot be used and for vMotion it's not necessary anyway, because vMotion should be configured to run in its own isolated subnet and therefore doesn't require a gateway.

Thank a.p I was curious as it shows up and although vmotion relies on layer 2 adjacency and uses it's isolated network it does use the management network for migration of cold data...I think
