VMRC Console has disconnected - attempting to reconnect. What should I be looking for?

Hi all,

I'm (rather) new to ESXi but not to virtualization etc. Trying to set up an ESXi 5.1 server - fresh install, no upgrade or anything.

I've set up a VM under the hypervisor, and try to power it on. When I try to launch a console, I get the "VMRC console has disconnected" message.

I tried everything that was suggested here on related threads - uninstall/reinstall the client, try to find stray VMware processes and kill them (there were none), - nothing helps.

I don't get a console no matter what I do. There's good connectivity to the server (client and SSH into hypervisor work, no problem).

I'm kinda lost. What should I be looking for next?

Client is VMware-viclient-all-5.1.0-1064113 . Client OS is Win7 64bit.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks. Unfortunately it does not. Tried that already, no env variable named "User", nor are there stray processes as described in the KB.

Can anyone direct me into what I need to be looking for - process, network, whatever - when the "vmrc has disconnected message" is the only thing I get when trying to open a console? It must be something simple (console works for everyone else, right?...) but I've no idea what to look for.

I found a vmware-vmrc.exe binary (and a bunch of DLLs) installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VMware\VMware Remote Console Plug-in 5.1\Internet Explorer  (and a Firefox directory right by it). All binaries properly signed (so intact). Running the binary from the command line returns immediately. IE10 does not seem to think it has a plugin installed. Firefox does. Changing default browser to be any of the two does nothing.

Help?!?...

vmrc is not supported in ESXi 5.1. Instead, I got it working using the VMWare player.exe. VMware player 6 works for me! My shortcut looks like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Player\vmplayer.exe" -h [IP of ESXi server -M [MOD]

The -M parameter can be filled by browsing to your ESXi server:

https://[IP of ESXi server]/mob/?moid=ha-folder-vm.

Or use the datastore path.

Hope this helps.

Vmrc player unexpected error caused due to internet explorer plugin

Try step 1 and if not resolved proceed to step 2

Step 1   vmware-vmrc.exe Processes

  • Exit your vSphere client
  • Open your Task Manager (many ways to do this) Ctrl-Alt-Del -> Choose “Start Task     Manager”
  • Look for any vmware-vmrc.exe process (es). Select it, then click “End Process”
  • Restart vsphere client

Step 2 Replacing internet explorer plugin

  • Copy the folder “Internet Explorer” from working Vpshere client installed machine.

        C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VMware\VMware Remote Console Plug-in 5.5\Internet Explorer

Hi Doron1,

You may want to try below link.

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=205047...

Also if you are connected via vcenter and unable to access vm console, kindly check if port 903 is opened for access.

Thanks and regards,

Shrikant
