I am using VMware ESXi and I am trying to setup a guest that is Windows 7 that will have an ATI Radeon video card passed through to it. I actually had this working on a previous system but I had to reinstall. Now when I do this the guest fails to start and I get the following:
Error message from localhost.XXXXXXXXXXX:
PCIPassthru 004:00.0: Guest tried to (null)map
32 device pages (with base address of 0xb5d20)
to a range occupied by main memory. This is
outside of the PCI Hole. Add pciHole.start =
"2909" to the configuration file and then power
on the VM.

When I do as it asks, the guest now starts but gets an immediate BSOD concerning memory management. Any ideas on why this is occuring and why it worked at one point but now it fails?
I've been skimming this thread for quite a few pages but I still haven't been able to find out one piece of information: does 3D passthrough work with an integrated AMD GPU? I have ordered an AMD A10-5700 APU (integrated Radeon 7660D) with a motherboard supporting SVM+IOMMU. But does the 3D support require a discrete PCI/PCIe based graphics card? My intention would be to use Windows 8 Pro for light gaming and HTPC duties at 1080p and for that I would need video and audio through the onboard HDMI.
Fresh install = no good. As soon as I install the WDDM driver, BSOD atikmpag.
Driver is definatly the ATi driver, 27/9/2012.
So fresh install 2gb, W7 x64 Ultimate.
Any other ideas? ![]()
Excuse my ignorance what do you mean by WDDM driver? Have you installed catalyst and vm tools? Then select the drivers from the ati folder I think in programs dir. Then chose device. Don't let anything automatic happen. And do all in safemode.
WDDM is the VMWare SVGA driver.
I installed everything manually but not in safemode. I installed catalyst in normal Windows and same with VMware tools.
Do you think it would change anything if I installed it in safe mode?
I would love to know if anyone has this board and have actually done this? Or am I just pushing up hill?
Cheers
Ok, I meant drivers in safe not. Catalyst + vm tools. Can you confirm you selected driver from list from list? What is WDDM driver?
Maybe you have already done this.
But a wery good advice is to as soon as you made the fresh install. Make a snapshot...
it speedsup thinks.
I would also advice the safe mode way.
Cheers

I ran into this with my mobo turned out it was the on board video option. I though it was disabled with the option of disable but I also had to change the onboard video memory to Auto for it to be fully off. I know you said it's disabled and the audio as well. How did you do it.
Stupid question but it seems to be the only thing that would cause your problem.
Did you check the Google doc to see if your motherboard was listed there as having been used successfully before?
HI all,
I changed my BIOS to:
iGPU - Always Diasble
Primary Video Card - I had it set to PCI but I changed it to Auto (was no video memory option only amount of video RAM)
Still BSOD on enable.
I forgot to take a snapshot before I started playing with drivers but I can do a fresh install again. I can try install CCC in safemode but I dont know if it will change anything as I have installed the drivers mnaually in safemode before.
I was going to disable the SVGA in Safe Mode and see if it will boot with the 7770 enbaled.
COuld you provide me with the good doc link? Must have missed it Sorry.
Thanks for your help everyone, hopefully I can get this working.
Its back on 23~26ish or so half way down the page. Which speaking of I need to add my own hardware in.
For the Install here a few tips.
1.) Latest BIOS,UEFI
2.) Limited the devices being passed thru to start use only the Video. Dont add any USB at the same time. This is to ensure that the board will work.
3.) Use a known working combo use Win7 or 8 x64 seems to be very common.
4.) Fresh install of the OS 2Gb RAM max.
5.) Snap shot the machine!!!!
6.) Do not install CCC the first pass do install not in safe mode.
7.) If no BSOD or worse Purple screen the server "Opps a few times" shutdown snap again and then install CCC.
8.) If your still broken give me beer and pizza and I'll take a look with ya.

Apply all windows update workout video card passed through. Then when I added the card again it just worked for me on win 7
Hey all,
Keep the suggestions comming, I am away until Monday now but I will try all the suggestions as soon as I get back! Thanks again all
I hadn’t even though of mentioning snapshots. This is the beauty of VM. Personally I do the same whether VM or not it ( obviously just ghost if not VM). Saves much time and gives piece of mind.
I also recommend that once (not if) you get it working. Dicsonect the GPu and take another snapshot.
.
Bizarly I hadnt received your answer re “WDDM is the VMWare SVGA driver.”
Given your error is a driver issue. The very same I had. I would strongly suggest you don’t install these WDDM but however you use catalyst and search for the driver within the ATI folder.
By.. Update driver >browse my computer > let me pick from a list > Have disk > Select DIR In my case dir = C:\AMD\Support\12-6-legacy_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_whql\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF
If you can see the snap shots, you’ll note that provider is AMD not VMWARE.
I can confirm the WDDM 1.1 “WAS” the cause of BSOD for me. In fact just to check I installed the WDDM.. and guess what..i got a BSOD.. .I decided to investigate more and found these drivers were published by ATI with a date for me of 2009.. however as you can see with working drivers the provider is AMD. . I changed back to AMD drivers. And guess what.. it works. It would be good to vompare the 2 sys files to see hwo they differ if at all..however this is beyond my realms of comprehension. .
I look forward to your return and to hear about your success on your return. ![]()
Hey champ,
Thanks for your help again, I will check when I get home that the driver is definatly the AMD driver and not the VMWare one.
Did you install the driver in Safe Mode?
Yes. Catalyst installed in normal ( ithink) driver updated in safe. Note they both show up as you can see in snap they both showed as AMD (although previously there was only 1 option. Just make sure you follow the steps and go to the inf directory.. and make snaps all the way.
Champ did you have an Intel DQ motherboard?
Anyone who has an Intel DQ board can you run me through what you did?
Do you have this option in your bios : Primary Graphics Adapter: PCI Express ?
have you install the vmtools. ?
Yes I have it set as my primary video adapter (iGPU is disabled also) and I have VMWare tools installed with the SVGA drivers installed on the VMware adapter.
@spangers
look in the google spreadhseet (signature). You will notice 7 persons trying the board and none succeeded. Pick another board that appears there multiple time and supports your CPU (which should also appear there, otherwise you have a slight chance of needing another CPU as well, but that you can only know for sure after getting a right MB)
Hi,
No I don’t. My preference is server boards. however all the same, it appears you ‘had’ not used 100% correct method.
Good luck
