VM showing inaccessible, getting "Object reference not set to an instance of an object error"

One of my VM's are greyed out and showing inaccessible. When I click on it in the VSPhere client I get the attached message. In the screen shot you can see that if I log directly into the host the VM's name shows up as Unknown 5. But if I log into the VCenter server it has the name.

have you tried to disconnect and connect the host back to vCetner to refresh the vCenter agent.  Or you can restart the management agents on the host in question.  My guess is that if the host sees it at a loss, at some point, so will vCenter.

I fixed it by removing the VM from the inventory and adding it back

My fix:  the VMKernel port was set for a mask 255.255.0.0 when it should have been mask 255.255.255.0
