VM's - keeping them in a specific order

ESX 4.0, VCenter 4.0

We have several VM's that need to be in a specific order after reboot or vmotion.

How do I make sure those specific VM's stay in order after they are vmotioned.? VMotioning seems to always put them into the "Any Order" group

thanks in advance

Hello.

Do you mean specific order as in (1) they need to be on defined hosts in the cluster, or as in (2) they need to start up and shut down in a particular sequence?

If (1), then you can use DRS affinity rules to keep virtual machines separated. You can also exclude virtual machines from participating in DRS to anchor them to a specific host.

If (2), then you can use vApp to specify the start up and shut down order of a group of virtual machines, but it won't help you with rebooting an individual team member later on. That process would need manual intervention, at that point.

Good Luck!

What ordering are you loking for , if you are looking for restartin priority then you can set that in VM Startup and Shutdown order through configuration tab. I am not sure if there is an orderinf after vmotion or restart apart from this.

Thanks,

Samir
