VM from Server 2.0 to ESXi 4.0

I tried to import a VM originally created on VMWare Server 2.0 as vm harware version 7 to an ESXi 4.0 server. It imported fine and shows as hardware version 7 in ESXi 4.0. But when I try to run it I get an error about it having an invalid disk type 7.

I guess I'll try to use the new converter to try to downgrade it to vm version 4 but I would have thought they would make ESXi fully compatible with vms from older products, including Server 2.0. I've been anticipating ESX 4.0 so I start looking at moving my version 7 vms over from server 2.0 without having to mess with them but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Wondering if anyone has seen this or has an idea of why this is happening?

I made a backup copy of the entire vm within the ESX store to have before starting to mess with the original I copied over from Server 2.0 and after the copy process the C: drive vmdk went from 5 GB to 30 GB and when I added this vm to the inventory it booted up just fine.

I guess the thin provisioning feature in Server 2.0 is not compatible with ESX, is this a bug? Interesting that it automatically expanded it just by copying it?

Hello,

I would use the latest version of VMware Converter to import from VMware Server 2 to VMware ESXi 4. It is interesting in that a copy expanded it. But how did you make the copy? Using 'cp', 'scp', vmkfstools, etc.
