VM causing host to purple screen

hi there,

We have a strange problem in that since migrating to ESXi 6 (and new network switches) the esxi6 server running our file server vm is randomly purple screening. It can't be hardware specific as it will happen on whatever host is running this particular VM. I've attached a screenshot if that helps.

The ESXi servers are running 6.0.0.2809209

Can anyone suggest what to look for? I am happy to provide more info if that will help. As you can imagine staff are not very happy with the file server crashing in the middle of the day.

My limited lookover over your purple screen leads me to suspect you have a problem with multipathing and disk access.

Does this VM have any RDM disks or other devices? Does it have a iscsi device mounted in the vm?

I would try a storage vmotion and see what happens.

On the stack is i40e, which is an Intel Ethernet Controller.

Make sure the NIC is on the VMware HCL and see if there are newer drivers/FW.

If the PSOD is caused by the VM, try another virtual NIC type for the VM.

Here is a similar discussion: Re: PSOD with intel X710-da2 network sfp+ card with driver i40e

Thanks for all the responses.

I thought the problem was fixed but it sadly returned today.

I have updated the NIC driver to version 1.2.48. It took me a while to work out how to do it!

Hopefully this will fix it.
