thanks Josh, but the question i've is why VMware has created vm version thing?
can anybody shre their thought ?
The virtual machine hardware version in ESX 4 is 7 as compared to hardware version 4 in ESX 3.5. The newer releases of hosted class vmware products also support hardware version 7.
This new H/W version has enhanced features like if the guest operating system supports them, you can add or remove some virtual devices while the virtual machine is powered on i.e. hot-plug.
Version 7 hardware is basically enhanced Virtual hardware making use of add features in ESX 4 - this includes higher performing NICs, betetr use of paravirtualisation etc.
Version 7 machines can not run on ESX 3.5 - so make sure you want to upgrade before you do! (Also, upgrade your VMTools before your hardware)
