Hi,
our hypervisor have two interface(two n/w cards) and we have created two n/w segment using virutal switch.
now our need is to have one more n/w segment should we use V distribution switch or should we add one more n/w interface and create the third n/w
segment using virutal switch.
would like to know what are the differnce between this two type of switch and what is prefered solution.
Thanks

Hi,
it doesn´t matter if you are using a vdSwitch or a vSwitch.
Are you using VLAN´s? Do you need an other subnet on your ESXi Server?
VLAN´s are the best for this configuration. You can talk to your network guys.
If you are using VLAN´s, you can use a vSwitch and configure different Port groups with VLAN Tags.
If you are using it, you do not need a extra Hardware Nic for each network segment.
And, you need the enterprise plus license for using vdswitch!!

Hi Frank,
Thanks for the reply which mean vdistribution is switch or object which some from v-center or in short one has to pay for license
and if want to acevie this same from hypervisor without v-center or for standalone hypervisor one can do by adding one extra hardware or nic on that.

Hi,
dvSwitch could only be used with a vCenter Server.
You are not able to use them without. If you only have a single Host, then you could only use a vSwitch.

The Distributed Switch is mostly useful for large installations with multiple hosts and frequent changes on the virtual networking. It is also only available in the highest license version: "Enterprise Plus".
