Hi all,
Currently, I am running a guest os - Microsoft server 2003 and I wish to upgrade it to Microsoft server 2008.
How do I go about upgrading? Is it possible for me to upgrade like the normal process - using installation disc as I wish to keep the present applications untouched except for those with compatibility issues. Or should I recreate a new virtual machine with server 2008 and reinstall applications?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
David
Hello,
you're right.
You can check this migration guide:

It should be planned well if you are planning to upgrade.
Just some details that I thought to copy paste from one of blogs @google.
In theory, an upgrade will save you time because you can skip much of the set-up work afterwards. In practice, upgrades have often caused problems. When you perform a clean installation, you get a fresh copy of Windows without any clutter. When you upgrade, Windows must attempt to bring your programs and settings with you. You won’t end up with a clean copy of Windows – you’ll end up with the latest version of Windows with your old programs and settings copied over. Files you haven’t used in years, registry entries created by long since-uninstalled programs, and other junk will remain on your fresh copy of Windows. Some applications may not be compatible and may be uninstalled during the upgrade process or may not work afterwards – you’ll have to reinstall some things anyway.

Thanks for link to the guide, so it means that I could just follow that while running my guest os server 2003 as per normal without changing any settings in esxi?
Thanks for your reply, so I guess its a choice of mine to do a new virtualization in esxi with server 2008 and install the applications I need or do a upgrade as per normal while running the guest os server 2003 with many issues you've mentioned.
Yes . Correct. Based on information, now you can finalize your decision.
Hello,
maybe the most flawless option is to make a clean windows 2008 server installation and then migrate the applications and data from the 2003.

Hello,
just changing the type of operating system from 2003 to 2008.
