Upgrading from vanilla 5.1 to customized IBM 5.5. Reinstall or using offline bundle?

I'm using a vanilla 5.1 Esxi on a IBM x3550-M3 since more than a year. All is working well, but I miss the complete support for SAS M5014 Megaraid Controller. (I/O latency messages are sent somewhen).

So i decided to upgrade my working Esxi to the customized IBM image. Both 5.1. and 5.5 IBM images do support my machine.

Which could be the best path to upgrade to customized image? I have only 5 Suse Linux VM running on 8 local SAS disks using RAID 1.

I read I can boot from IBM 5.5.0 esxi iso DVD. In this case may I save all my configurations and perform an upgrade or I have to redefine all my VM?

I see also that I can download an IBM Offline Bundle for 5.5.0. (Depot.zip).   Can it be applied to an old 5.1 or I must first upgrade esxi 5.1 to 5.5 and then apply the IBM bundle?

Please excuse my questions and my english, this is my first upgrade.
