Upgrading a 5.5 VM to 6.5

I've gotten ESxi server running succesfully from our usual "ESXi on a usb" with data on a local raid and mapped isci

Have created one VM using latest converter  - all well

But cannot work out how to update the 5.5 VM's we have on bits of storage to 6.5vm's i.e. from "ESXi 5.0 and later (VM version 8)"   to "ESXi 6.0 and later (VM version 11)"

TIA all

You're talking about upgrade the virtual hardware version? If yes, what error you're getting? And which is the version of the vSphere ESXi where the virtual machines that you want to upgrade are running?

Thanks for asking

The VM server is ESXi 6.5 and I'm using a workstation web browser to control it

Right clicking on the virtual machine in the browser has the option "upgrage VM compatibility" is greyed out

I'm asking really as I cannot update VMware tools on that VM despite it running a being able to update its own software  - it is running MS Server 2008

Again TIA

Same happens if you try upgrade the hardware version using the ESXi Host Embedded Client? And is the virtual machine that you want upgrade the hardware powered off?
