Upgrading VMware ESX 4 to ESX 4 Upgrade 1

Hello,

I have a single VMware ESX4 server which also has VMWare vCenter server installed on it. Well, I cannot run updates figure out how to ever run patches updates with the vCenter Update Manager. Every time I attempt to do an update it says Cannot run since the Vcenter server is on the same host as the machine I need to update. This is a huge issue. I have 2008 R2 i need to install and I have no way on knowing how to update the ESX to 4.0 U1. can someone help me with instructions on how to do this? I am very new to ESX and could really use the assistance.

Hello.

If you decide to go with the esxupdate option, then this link might be helpful.

Good Luck!

Hello Troy,;

Thanks for the link. I did try the command esxupdate --bundle=ESX4-0.0-update01.zip update however got an error message about file not found or something. I guess I should say I'm very new to ESX updating so I might need a bit more help with figuring this out. Also, in vCenter update manager there are over 30 or so updates that show are needed on my ESX box. Is there an auto-update command that will go and download all the updates and install them?

Thanks all,

Was able to download and upgrade ESX 4 and all looks good. The step-by-step instructions was what I was looking for. Now I am downloading the vCenter server upgrade. Just wondering, should have done the vCenter upgrade to U1 1st than upgrade the host or vis-versa?
