Upgrade 4.0 to 4.0 U1 using DVD boot?

Is it not possible to upgrade a ESX 4.0 host to ESX 4.0 U1 by just booting off the newer DVD?..

I boot off the DVD and it seems like it wants to just re-install. I saw the this doc:

But for a small enviroment just the DVD method would be fine, and it seems Host Update wont either. I updated one host using UpdateManager but since my VC is virtual its a bit harder to update the host the VC is on (w/o moving VC to iscsi via storage vmotion, then moving VC to other host, then using updatemanger to update 1 host.. pain)..

Use esxupdate --bundle=ESX4-0.0-update01.zip update from the ESX console to update.
