Updating and ESXi host before joining the vSphere infrastructure

I installed ESXi 5.5 U2 on an HP Proliant DL560 host using the HP ESXi 5.5 U2 CD.

I need to install VMware and HP Patches before joining the host to the vSphere infrastructure.

What is the best way to download and install HP and VMware Patches on a standalone (at the moment) ESXi host?

Hi,

Essentially, you will use the vSphere client to connect to the host using root credentials. Does the host have local storage? If not, can you connect it to a datastore in your environment?  From there you can upload the patches and SSH into the host and execute the following command "esxcli software vib install -d "/vmfs/volumes/DATASTOREGUID/update-from-esxi5.5-5.5_update02-2068190.zip"

Obviously, that command is an example but it resembles the format you need to follow.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the quick answer!

Where can I locate the Patches and SSH?

Hi Marius,

Do you know what the current patch level is?

I am assuming since you installed ESXi 5.5 Update 2 you are currently on 2068190. To ensure consistency in your environment, can you check to see what your other hosts are at?

ESXi 5.5 Patch 32014-10-162143827N/A
ESXi 5.5 Update 22014-09-092068190N/A
ESXi 5.5 Patch 22014-07-011892794N/A

The easiest way to check is to login to your vCenter and select a host from the left column -> top should contain hostname or IP VMware ESXi, 5.5.0, 2068190.
