Update from ESXi Version 5.0.0-469512 to HP Custom Image for VMware ESXi 5.1.0 Update 1

Hi I have a problem. I have installed the normal ESXi 5.0.0.-469512 image from the vmware page on a HP ProLiant DL380 G7 in 2012 (it was my first esxi installation). Everything is working till now. I have to add an usb dongle for some software and I recognize that the usb ports didn`t work. Is it possible to update to the HP Custom Image for VMware ESXi 5.1.0 Update 1? Or is there another chance to enable the usb ports? The bad thing it`s a live server so I can`t make any mistakes.

thx for help

As I know, you can upgrade from ESXi 5.0 to ESXi 5.1 U1 but you can check that on VMware Compatibility Matrix.

About your problem with USB, do you using Pass-Through right now? If not, you can present your USB devices via Pass-Through to your virtual machines directly.

Hi, I have enabled the usb ports in the configuration.

Bildschirmfoto 2014-01-10 um 13.30.49.png

but if I try to add the usb device the client told that there is nothing.

If I plug in the device at onther pc the usb device led is flashing if I plug it in into the server it`s not. So I think the usb drivers aren`t okay!?

If the restart of the service wouldn`t help do you have any other ideas to get them running?

try this and set to be on persistently off and then restart the service.

~ # chkconfig usbarbitrator off

~ # chkconfig usbarbitrator on

~ # /etc/init.d/usbarbitrator start
