Update ESX using an Update Manager

hi

How To use Update Manager from a vSphere client if the vCenter Server is installed as a guest on the same machine?
It seems to be a problem with a maintenance mode.
If the vCenter Server is running, then the ESX cannot go into the maintenance mode.
Should I install vCenter Server on an other, different machine, to do updates?

Hi,

Why dont you unregister and register the VC on another host and perform the operation via VUM?

Bump an old thread.

I was wondering the same thing. When my reseller helped us set up or environment we installed VCenter on a guest. I'm not a sophisticated user yet, is it as simple as installing Vcenter on some other physical computer and registering it?

Perhaps it doesn't because of maintenance mode during the update.

I hope, with new VMware releases this update problem will be solved.

It shouldn't be a big problem, like on other software to update, during the booting time.

In your case as VC is a guest in the ESX box, the VUM operations cant be performed.

So please clone the VM which has the vCenter Server installed to a new host. So dont take the extra effort of doing the re-installation.
