Unable to mount a cifs share

Hello guys !

I m wondering why I can t mount an samba share on my ESX4i ?

The same share is mounted on a ESX 2.5i, but on 4.i I have mounting //IP/share on /tmp/backup/ failed: No such device message

I can ping the server IP. Nothing related in /var/log/messages

The command typed is mount //IP/share /tmp/backup -t cifs (or smbfs) -o username=user, password=pass

Thx

ESX 2.5i does not exist Smiley Happy

In full ESX version you have also the samba client package that is need to mount a Windows share.

In ESXi this part is not present.

Andre thx for this answer !

So I should use NFS to backup my VM outside the server ?

NFS could be a simple solution if you have a NAS that support NFS v3 over TCP.

Or you can use some free backup solutions (like GhettoVCB) or maybe also some commercial product (like Veeam, Vizioncore, ...)

I plan to use GhettoVCB, the NFS share would be used to store the VM outside the ESX4i datastore. I make some test with iscsi target too. The main idea is again to backup VM outside the server for recovery in case of RAID failure.
