I just did a new install with all the latest software. However I want to upgrade some ESX hosts 4.1 to 4.1U1. When I try to import the zip in Update Manager (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=102935...), I always get a checksum error. However the checksums match the ones supplied by VMware and I'm uploading locally ( a vsphere client running on the update manager server). I retried a couple of times. I even tried an other patch via the same procedure and this worked succesfully. Is the release bugged?
try to create a host patch baseline instead. In that baseline you should see U1. Attach that host patch baseline to the host/cluster and remediate.
To be honest, I run into this quite a bit. I still haven't found a valid fix. You can look at the KB article below, which may help you

I assume this statement means you are running U1 for vCenter and VUM has been updated as well?
Actually it is a brand new install (both vCenter as well as Update manager) from the 4.1u1 zip. I also saw in the logs the following (same as KB)

Thanks this seems to work (seeing patches in the repository now), so I'm going to try to update
