Unable to create virtual disk on different datastore from the one hosting the VM

Hi

I'm using ESXi 6 and the web interface to try to create an additional virtual harddisk for a VM.

Currently I have two disks:

1. Samsung EVO 850 500GB

2. WD-Red 6TB

I have also set up two data stores one on each disk.

The virtual machine is stored on disk 1 (data store 1) along with the OS virtual harddisk.

What I want to do is create a new virtual harddisk that fills the entire 6TB disk (data store 2) WITHOUT touching the SSD (data store 1). I'm able to select the data store as storage and specify a size of 5.46TB for it, but as soon as I click save the disk jumps back to the first data store. I've tried all combinations of settings for the VHD that I can think of, but the disk still jumps back to the SSD (data store 1). I've tried creating smaller disks (15GB), but it still jumps back to the SSD.

Why can I not create a disk on a separate data store/hdd and why then does it allow me to select a different one only to jump back?

When you say "web interface" are you talking about the Host Client or the vSphere Web Client? And same behavior happens if you use the vSphere Client and try for example create a 10GB disk on different datastore?

Sorry. I'm brand new to this stuff. I'm using the web interface from a secondary machine on the same network (vSphere Web Client). I tried using the vSphere Client and couldn't find a way to create a disk separately there either so I eventually just went back to hyper-v which also supports mounting physical disks directly into VMs eliminating the problem.
