Unable to connect to ESXI host with Vsphere 5.5 client

I am running Windows 7 x64 and vSphere cilent 5.5 and am trying to connect to an ESXi 5 host.  I am able to ping both the FQDN and the IP but when I try to connect via the vSphere client, I get this message:

"vSphere Client could not connect to "x.x.x.x".

An unknown connection error occurred.  (The request failed because of a connection failure.  (Unable to connect to the remote server))

What can I do to troubleshoot this issue?  The hosts are 300+ miles away from me.

Welcome to the Community - First thing I would check is your workstation and see if a firewall is enabled and blocking the ports vSphere needs to communicate -

443 and 902 are not blocked - both inbound and outbound.  I have tried it with firewall turned off too.

To verify port 902 is open between you and the host, you can try telnet <host> 902. Also, do you have ssh enabled on the hosts? Can you ssh to the host?

Hi flyboynm,

Please check if you have 443 and 902 tcp and udp port open.

TCP and UDP both are required , keeping one open does not help.

Thanks and Regards,
