Hi
I'm trying to connect a Toshiba v63700-H 2TB external HDD via USB 3.0 ports on my HP Microserver Gen8 G1610T for passthrough to a VM running Windows 10. I'm not having luck being able to see the HDD appearing in the selection window, when trying to add an USB device to a VM. The xHCI USB controller has been added, and I know the connection works, since I can add e.g. a Kingston 8GB DataTraveler 100 G3 USB key without problems. I've searched for a solution, and stumpled upon others having same issues, but they got it working by connecting via SSH to ESXi and load the XHCI module. I've tried running the vmkload_mod xhci command, but the system responds, that the module is already loaded, and well, I kind of new, since it already worked with the USB key. Whe I run the lsusb command via SSH, I can also fine see the HDD appear in the list, so what's wrong?
The HDD is encrypted with TrueCrypt, and I suspected it to be the reason why ESXi couldn't see it, but since it appeared in the list, I thought that couldn't be the issue. But to be sure, I tried encrypting a USB key too, and insert it. No problem. It appers fine in selection window when adding USB devices to VM.
So I'm a bit lost and run out of things to try. Anyone having inputs to what it can be or things I can try? I'm no shark in regards to ESXi but have som e experience. I'm running the free HP specific ESXi on my private HP server.
Best regards
Frank
Apparently, I'm also having issues connecting my Seagate 1TB USB 2.0 HDD to same Windows 10 machine. I've tried both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports in the back and USB 20.0 ports in front. The disk appears in the selectionlist when adding USB device to virtual machine, and it appears in CLI using lsusb command. Tried using "search for new devices" in Device Manager = nothing happends. I can't se the disk in Disk Management either. I've installed both USB controllers at this time.
How can I troubleshoot this issue? Moved away from a Windows 7 machine to be able to use USB 3.0 ports. Now I can use non USB HDD's. Going backwards ![]()
Edit: I have tested connectivity with an 8GB USB 3.0 stick which works fine in both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. I've also tried adding power to HDD with out luck. My Seagate USB 2.0 HDD has worked fine in Windows 7.

Okay, I've just tried removing the xHCI controller, leaving just the std. controller available for USB 1.0 and 2.0 devices staying behind. This made my Seagate HDD work. The Toshiba HDD is still not showing up in the list. Tried in both USB.30 and 2.0 ports.
