The system's fans run at high speed (100 %) generating more noise than normal until the VM boots.

Dear ALL,

We installed ESXi 6.5 on HP Proliant ML 350 Ge 9.

a strange phenomenon was found after installing and configuring the  PCI control (P440ar) on the virtual machine linux:  the system's fans run at high speed (100 %)  generating more noise than normal until the VM boots.

the FW oh the smart array p440Ar 5.04.

Could you please help us?

Thank you.

Regards.

What does the SmartArray controller have to do with a Linux VM you're running on this host? Can you explain how you've configured this host and what you're doing? Also, what is the BIOS version of the server?

Thank you for your response.

the controller is used to configure the LTO reader connected to this VM (please see the screenshot attached).

Smart Array P440Ar FW version is 5.04

I have to restart the Hp Proliant machine to retreive the Bios Version.

ProLiants have a history of doing the 100% fan thing when they can't get any sensor data from its guts.

They are made to run amok as a failsafe, unless told otherwise to calm down.

Ever since SAS replaced U320-scsi in the Smart Array, people would sometimes try their best to use non-Hp regular SATA drives. Smart Arrays don't like plain SATA drives, but they will work. I'm not implying that is your problem, it was just to give an example.

So you did something to interrupt that... usually the HPE builds ESXi take care of all that, but if an update broke it, that's certainly a bug to report.
