From a readiness perspective of managing VM templates, a built-in vSphere feature - see here, is a good starting point. You can import, check-out, make feature updates + changes and check-in easily your VM templates in a vSphere content library. The content library items report displays VM templates and other files that are available in the content library. The vSphere client and the PowerCLI cmdlets both are appropriate toolings.
