Storage Configuration

Hello

I'm looking to virtualise our file server.  Is there any issue with creating a volume in VMWare of 6TB?  We are using ESXi 6.0, I read that earlier versions had a 2TB limit but now this has gone away.  I just want to be sure I'm not going to cause myself problems further down the road.

Thanks

Nick

Hi there,

You are correct, the limit for a datastore is 64TB in 6.0 and the limit for an individual VMDK is 62TB so 6TB isn't a problem.

Hope this helps!

There isn't any issue with creating a volume that is 6TB, the datastore can be up to 64TB and VMDK up to 62TB.

Configuration Maximum is always handy https://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere6/r60/vsphere-60-configuration-maximums.pdf

Just be sure to get a controller with battery- or flash-backed write cache and don't use RAID-5 for a datastore of that size.
