Static binding in Distributed Virtual Switch with ESX4

Anyone have configured static binding that mac address of a Virtual Machine with port on vDS. I'm looking for information where I can configure particular virtual machine with particular port number in vDS. I can see the option in Network Adaptor to specific port but cann't see the port id number in vDS.

If there is any other way we can specify particular port number manually to VM.

Let me rephrase the question, if this is possible in vShpere 4

the vSphere client gives you the option to assign either a portgroup or a specify port to a VM NIC, the problem is that the drop-down list to select the specific port is always empty...

1- Create a dvSwitch

2- Create a VM

3- Right-click on the VM and click on Edit Settings

4- Click on one of your NICs

5- SELECT THE "SPECIFY PORT" OPTION UNDER "NETWORK CONNECTIONS"

6- SELECT THE DVSWITCH

7- TRY TO SELECT A SPECIFIC PORT BUT YOU WILL HAVE AN EMPTY DROP-DOWN LIST

So, in the vSphere client, you can either select a portgroup or "SPECIFY PORT" but when you select the "SPECIFY PORT" option, the "Port ID"

drop-down list is always empty.

If vSphere doesn't support assigning a dvport ID to a VM,

there an option to do so in the vSphere client??

why is drop-down list always empty??

you have to create the standalone dvPorts (standalone dvport does not belong to any dvPortgroup) in dvs so that you can connect VM's nic to a dvPort directly.

In your case the dropdown is list is empty because most likely you haven't created the standalone dvPorts. To create standalone dvPorts you will have to use the SDK API (the UI does not option to create standalone dvPorts). thanks
