Sockets

Hello,

I'm a bit confused about the Socket, cores in ESXi.

I'm running SBS2008 on HP ML150 with dual socket quad core cpu.

In total I have 8 cores but my SBS sees only 4.

I want to configure 2 sockets each has 4 cores.

How can I do it in ESXi 4.1

Cheers,

Yuri

the only way to do this is to have Enterprise Plus licensing. You would still need to present 8 vCPU's to your guest in order to get 2 sockets w/ 4 cores.  The maximum vCPU's you can present to a non Entprise Plus guest is 4.

Even though Troy already answered the question, I'd like to ask you how may VMs you plan to run on the host? Keep in mind that all VM's as well as the Hypervisor itself have to share the physical resources (CPUs/cores and memory). As a best practice in virtualization, only assign as many resources as really needed to a single VM. I'd recommend you start with just 2 vCPUs and only increase the count if you experience performance issues in the guest.

Hi,

I'm running only 1 VM, SBS2008 premium.

I just want to make sure I'm using all resources.

If you are running only 1 VM, and DONT have a Ent+ license, you will not be able to use all your resources.

If your server model is supported for ESXi 5.0, you may consider to upgrade to 5.0. IIRC the ESXi 5.0 Hypervisor supports an 8-way vCPU. Anyway, remember that your host will also need resources!

Andre is absolutely right - forgot about the change in ESXi 5.

Good catch!
