I have researched this issue and seen no answer for this anywhere... but I still have to solve the problem.
Transferring our VMs from Server 2.0 to ESXi 5.1 is taking an extraordinarily long time. For example: 300GB takes 7 days to transfer. The max transfer rate I get is 5Mb/s...! I have tried ssh+wget, WinSCP and VMWare Converter.
Prior to running VMWare this hardware was running Win2k8 and there were no problems with disk speed or network throughput.
So my question is: will a licence for the ESXi remove the bottleneck?
Furthermore: do people have this problem with vSphere?
Any [constructive] advice would be appreciated.
Welcome to the Community - No adding a license key will not affect the transfer speed - How is you network configured? When using converters what method are you using to bring over the VM - while the VM is running or converting the files that make up the VM?
Try "Veeam FastSCP" with this you can upload VMs to ESXi faster than any other tool.
How is the storage on the ESXi host configured?
Other than Windows, ESXi does not do any write caching any fully relies on the storage sub-system, e.g. a controller with write-back cache. If this is not available, you may be limited due to the disk controller operation in write-through mode.
