  • 1.  Simple question on hyper threading with vsphere 4

    Posted Apr 28, 2010 08:37 PM

I have a dual quad core server (total of 8 CPU's) that has ESXI 4.0 installed on. I am going to make a single Windows server 2003 (or 2008) vm and give all 8 CPU's to the OS. I want to do hyper threading and i would like to know how may CPU's will the OS see and try to use? 8 or 16?

I am thinking it should not matter to the OS and it would see 16.

BUT i have been wrong before.

If anyone knows that would be great. Of if they can point me to an existing discussion.

    Thanks

Have have exactly the same setup. It's a HP DL380 G6 with Hyperthreading enabled. You will only be able to give your guests a max of 8 CPU as ESX is aware of CPU hyperthreading. You would not have a performace increase in any case as hyperthreading just allows 2 channels to a core but not two loads so if one channel is using the CPU the other will wait.

    Hope that helps

Ok, hyper threading is not really worth it. If i give it 8 CPUs then it will only have the 8. If i give it 4 then it will only have 4.

Not what i wanted to hear but at least i know before is try to set it up :smileyhappy:

That's right! Now the core's of CPU are more important than the hyperthreading. Be careful giving a guest the total amount of CPU's you have available because there will be none left for the ESX host to run on! :smileyshocked:
