Shutting down VMs when going to Maintenance Mode on standalone host

Hi,

Our organisation is looking at purchasing ESXi 4 with a standard license for 29 hosts. Each host will be physically located in different geographic regions. Each host will run 2-3 Windows VMs. Links between sites are standard ADSL. The standard license are being purchased so that they all could be managed by a central VMware Vrtual Centre.

My question is, how do I shut down VMs on these hosts when going into maintenance mode. The reason, when using the update manager on our Virtual Centre server, the host is required to go into maintenance mode. Now as our VMs are not able to be vmotioned due to license and Link speed, they will need to be shutdown. Maintenance Mode does not shutdown the VMs. All VM hosts will have vmware tools installed.

Can anyone offer any suggestions as I would like to schedule the update manager to update the esx hosts after hours.

thanks

Vince

Hi Meolav,

Welcome to the forum.

One solution could be to run a remote CLI script to shut down your VMs. You should find information in that thread .

Hope it helps
