Server Modules and Config Recommendation

Hi there

I plan to buy 2 servers "HPE Dl380 G10" for a small company.

- Dual CPU 6200 series (CPU clock near 3.0 as 6226R )

- 6 * 32 GB RAM (for each server)

- 4 HDD 2.4 (Raid 5 + HOT SWAP) as Storage

- M2 for Cache

A Server for Web/APP and another for MS SQL DataBase.

Both will run under ESXi (VMWare will install on SD Memory inside the server), so I'm going to config vSAN and use them as H.A.

Does anyone have any recommendations about CPU, RAM modules, Configuration, or anything to make this better (Price / Performance)?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

VMTN has an area for ESXi, a moderator will be along to move it there seeing as this has nothing to do with Skyline.

Hi,

to be honest, your post irritates me because of the following facts.

  • vSAN would (normally) require a minimum of 3 phyiscal nodes.
2 Node is also possible, but would require a vSAN witness running somewhere else
  • vSAN doesn't use HW RAID
  • vSAN Erasure Coding (RAID 5) would require at least 4 All Flash Nodes (5 when HA Node is required)
  • why do you plan to use dual socket nodes, but only equip each of the sockets with 96GB RAM

When vSAN should be used as shared storage I would recommend to use (at least) 3 single socket nodes.

This would

  • reduce license costs,
  • load could be distributed over 3 Nodes (2 in case of maintenance node/node down) instead of 2 (1 in case of MM/node down)
  • 2 Node vSAN Clusters use case is designed for edge locations, not to host core business of a company
  • no need to run a vSAN witness somewhere

Regards,

Ralf

Hope this helps a bit.
