Hi there,
i would like to ask for your help on a serious network-problem which occured on our ESX4 Servers after applying the actual update 2.
Here is a overview of our ESX-Server with software version:
ESX2, ESX 4.0.0, 256968
ESX3, ESX 4.0.0, 261974
ESX4, ESX 4.0.0, 261974
ESX5, ESX 4.0.0, 261974
ESX6, ESX 4.0.0, 256968
The VDS runs at version 4.0.4.SV1.2 and is used on all ESX-Hosts in the same configuration.
The problem we are experiencing only occurs on ESX3, ESX4 and ESX5. If i migrate a guest to ESX2 or ESX6 the problem is gone, putting it back on the three other hosts breaks network-performance again. One thing to mention: i can't do vmotion while guest is online on ESX3,4 or 5: the process get's stuck between 20-60% an then runs into timeout. Starting vmotion with a guest running on ESX2 or ESX6 is working fine.
The symptom of the problem is, that network operation in guest-machines is extremly slow. Strangely the behaviour differs between TX (guest sending data) and RX (guest receiving data). With RX i get a througput of about 80-90% of NIC-speed. With TX it's only 0,03-0,05%! This is extremly slow an mostly all applications run into timeouts.
I would appreciate any help on this!
Thanks
Thorsten
The article says, that ESX4 Update 2 does not work with 4.0.4.SV1.1
Our DVS is already at release 4.0.4.SV1.2, but we will try the update to 4.0.4.SV1.3 this evening and see if it helps...
