I'm looking at the Scheduled Tasks that are available in vCenter Server 4.x and see cloning. I have a SQL server that I could like to backup only the system partitions on. Does anyone know if certain VMDKs can be exempted from scheduled tasks cloning or should this be accomplished via CLI or third party tool?
Thanks
Cloning is always performed for a whole VM. If you want to backup only VM's system disk take a look at backup solution.
I prefer Veeam Backup, and I backup my VMs with Oracle same way - Veeam Backup takes system disk only, DB backup is performed by our DBAs. How do they do it I don't care.

Thanks for the reply. I wonder if the clone would only do the system partition if the data luns were RDMs in physical mode.
Cloning is not backup. VMFS goes down - you lose both VMs and their "backups".
