SSD flash HGST-Ultrastar-SN260-NVMe problem

I have a SSD Flash HGST-Ultrastar-SN260-NVMe in an SuperMicro server.

I install VMWare 6.7. And i did not se any device for this adapter.

I see that the adapter is on HCL and have the right firmware and drivers.

I see in the Configure the Model: Ulstrastar SN200 Series NVMe SSD on the vmhba4.

But i not see anything in the Storage Devices. Only my HDD SAS drive that i have also.

In the Windows server installd ont this server i see alls hdd on this Adapter.

1.6 Tb size.

Did i forgett someting for this adatper to show up in the Configure?

Or is there a driver issue or tomething?

Thanks

Hi Patric,

Did you ever find a solution to this?

I have the exact same card (this time in a Dell R720 server) but exact same issue...

Thanks,

Dylan

Hi Dylan,

I have the same problem and I can’t find any solution.

You solve your problem with this HGST NVMe adapter?

Thanks,

Marius.

Ultrastar SN200 Series NVMe SSD

   Model Number: HUSMR7632BHP301

   Firmware Revision: KNGND110

   esxcfg-info   Class 0108: 1c58:0023

I can see the adapter , but none storage device.

HCL:

https://www.westerndigital.com/support/wdc/data-center-drives/ssd/ultrastar-sn200-series

https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?deviceCategory=io&productid=44402&vcl=true

Reason:

"ESXi does not support 4Kn SSD and NVMe devices, or 4Kn devices as RDMs"

Device Sector Formats

SN200 is formatted with 4Kn sectors size from manufacturer, so ESX can not see it as storage - check /var/log/vmkernel.log file on ESX.

Solution:

Low level format  of the SN200 disk with 512 sector-size.

eg: hdm format --sector-size 512 --metadata-size 0 --dif-level 0 /dev/nvme0

hdm tool from WD is needed for the low level format.

I could not find hdm tool on official WD support website.

My support request to WD was unanswered. WS support of SN200 is very poor (no firmware, no UserGuide, no sw tools to download).

So i used windows version from unofficial source:

https://www.win-raid.com/t4627f25-Windows-NVMe-driver-for-HGST-Ultrastar-DC-SN-SAS-NVMe-SSD.html

After low level format is the SN200 detected as storage device with no problems (tested on ESX 6.5u3, 6.7u3).

Proxmox is also the working way.

Hi,

I have a few of these HHHL/PCIe 7.68Tb drives and experiencing issues because I'm using an old firmware (KNGND101).

Does anyone know where to find the newer firmware? KNGND110
