SCSI vs. IDE Virtual Drives

Hello!

This question may have been answered elsewhere, but this far I have not seen it.

If we are running ESXi 4 on a SATA hard drive, does it make any difference in performance whether we create our virtual hard drives as SCSI or IDE drives? Is there a performance gain or loss to either? I would tend to think that because the underlying drive and controller is actually SATA, that choosing to create virtual SCSI drives would not provide a performance gain, or could perhaps entail a performance loss, but I'd like some confirmation or correction from those of you with experience.

Thanks for your help!

You should always create SCSI Disks, even if the underlying System is SATA.

IDE should only be used for CD-ROMs.

ESX(i) does not support creation of IDE virtual drives. ESX only support SCSI virtual drives.

Oops, missed that Smiley Happy If you always use the wizard, IDE drives are quite hidden from view Smiley Happy Anyway, as best practice I never use them.
